Performance Marketing in Perth: What It Is, What It Costs and How to Measure It

“Performance marketing” gets thrown around a lot, and plenty of Perth business owners have been sold a version of it that looked more like “we will spend your money and send you a report full of impressions.” Real performance marketing is simpler and much more demanding: every campaign is planned, run and judged on a measurable business result. A lead, a booking, a sale or an app install.

I have spent more than seven years running paid social and search campaigns on that basis. This guide is the conversation I have with every new client before we spend a dollar.

What performance marketing actually is

Performance marketing is advertising where the goal is an action you can count, and where budget follows results. In practice that usually means Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram), Google Search and Performance Max, TikTok, YouTube and app install campaigns. The channel matters less than the discipline: track the result, test what drives it, and move money towards what works.

The opposite is awareness advertising, which is judged on reach and recall. Awareness has its place, but if you are a Perth business that needs enquiries this month, you want your spend tied to outcomes.

The four numbers that matter

  • Cost per result. Cost per lead, cost per booking, cost per download. This is the headline number and the one we work hardest to bring down.
  • Conversion rate. The share of people who click and then take the action. A low conversion rate is usually a landing page or offer problem, not an ad problem.
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS). For e-commerce and bookings with a known value, revenue divided by ad spend.
  • Lead quality. The number most reports ignore. Twenty cheap leads that never answer the phone are worth less than five good ones, so we always ask clients to tell us which leads turned into customers.

What it costs in Perth

There are two parts. Your ad spend goes directly to Meta or Google, and an agency charges a management fee for strategy, creative, setup, optimisation and reporting. For most Perth small and medium businesses, a sensible starting ad budget is somewhere between $1,500 and $5,000 a month, depending on how competitive your industry is and how many results you need. Below that, it becomes hard to gather enough data to optimise properly.

Be wary of anyone who promises a specific cost per lead before they have seen your account, your offer and your website. Cost per result is something you earn through testing, not something you can quote on day one.

Tracking comes first

If you cannot measure a result, you cannot optimise for it. Before launching, we set up the Meta Pixel and Conversions API, GA4 conversion events, call tracking where phone enquiries matter, and SDK events for apps. This is unglamorous work, and it is the single biggest reason campaigns succeed or fail. Platforms like Meta and Google learn from the conversion data you send them. Send them clean data and they find more people like your best customers.

How we know it is working

A good campaign shows a clear pattern: cost per result settles after the learning phase and then trends down as winning creative and audiences take more of the budget. When we ran app install campaigns for BetterFit, cost per download fell from $10.00 to $4.95. That is the shape you are looking for.
